Timber & aluminium venetians in Noordhoek

Farm-house warmth in timber; wet-room practicality in powder-coated aluminium.

Venetians are the most adjustable blind made: horizontal slats tilt to steer light — glare-free daylight, privacy from overlooking windows, or closed-down darkness — at any blind height. Aluminium versions shrug off steam and salt; timber brings real warmth to character rooms.

Practical notes

Why a tilting slat suits this valley

The hardest light in Noordhoek is not overhead, it is sideways. In a Cape summer the sun sets in the south-west, low enough that no roof overhang catches it, and a blind that only goes up and down has exactly one answer to that: cover the window and lose the room. A slat has a second answer. Close the angle and the direct beam stops while the room stays bright, which on a west-facing living room is the difference between using it at six and avoiding it.

That is also why slat width and tilt quality matter more here than they might elsewhere. A wider slat gives a cleaner view through when open and stacks deeper when raised; a narrower one eats less glass on a short window. Both are made to the opening, so the choice is about the room rather than about what is on a shelf.

Timber or aluminium: the coast usually decides

Timber slats suit the older Cape-vernacular and farm-style rooms in this valley, and there is no getting around the fact that they feel and look softer. In a dry living room or study well back from the beach, that is a fair choice and we will happily specify it.

Near the water, and in any wet room, powder-coated aluminium is the honest call instead. Salt and steam will warp or discolour timber over time, and aluminium takes a coastal-grade finish that keeps working. On sea-facing openings we specify marine-grade fittings to match, and we will say plainly which finishes we would not put near the sea at all — salt goes through lower-grade hardware considerably faster than most people budget for.

What a venetian blind costs here

Guides, per square metre installed. Aluminium slats of 25mm or 50mm come in at R1,000 to R1,500 on a wand or cord, or R2,500 to R3,600 motorised. Timber, wider and hand-finished, comes in at R1,600 to R2,600 hand-operated, or R3,000 to R4,500 with a motorised tilt.

The saving comes from choosing by the room rather than by the price list, because replacing timber that has been put somewhere salty or steamy costs more than fitting aluminium there to begin with. Narrow windows attract a minimum, since headrail, tilt mechanism and ladder tapes barely shrink with the opening. These are ranges, not a quote: every window is measured free and priced on its own line in writing.
