Over the hill, but still in the valley's weather

Sun Valley and Sunnydale sit between the beach side and the Fish Hoek side, which buys a degree of shelter without changing the underlying brief. Cape Town's two seasonal winds still arrive: the dry, hard south-easter through summer, pouring down off the mountains for days at a time, and north-westerly fronts in winter bringing the rain. The steep peninsula mountains speed that wind up, so exposure varies noticeably across short distances — one street can be markedly calmer than the next, and a stoep tucked behind a gable behaves nothing like one thrown open to the valley.

That is why exposure is judged at the property rather than assumed from the address. Where an outdoor room takes the wind directly, a captive-edge screen with the fabric running in side channels holds tension where an open-sided drop blind would not last a season. Where a spot is genuinely sheltered, a simpler product is the honest recommendation and the cheaper one.

The light, aspect by aspect

North is the easy elevation. At roughly 34° south the summer noon sun climbs to about 79°, so a modest eave shades a north window cleanly in December, while in midwinter it only reaches about 33° and reaches deep into the room as welcome warmth. A sunscreen roller is usually all a north window needs: glare and ultraviolet handled, view and brightness kept.

West and south-west is where the work is. In summer the sun sets in the south-west, low enough that no roof overhang catches it, and on those walls a plain interior blind darkens the room without stopping the heat, because the pane behind it still warms and radiates inward. East and south-east bedrooms have the opposite problem: a summer sunrise in the south-east delivers low, direct light from just after five, which is a blockout conversation for anyone who would rather sleep past dawn in December.

Family houses, and the fittings that suit them

A great deal of what goes into these homes is chosen with children and daily use in mind. Chain controls are fitted with a wall-anchored child-safe tensioner as standard, and where a cot or a bed sits under the window a cordless spring or a motor takes the loop out of the room entirely. A double bracket carrying sunscreen and blockout on one headrail is the practical answer for a child's room that wants garden light through the day and proper darkness at bedtime.

The wet season sets the other half of the specification. Winter here is the rainy one, with cold north-westerly fronts and days of grey, and the cooler south-facing rooms feel it. On a large single-glazed pane a honeycomb cellular blind traps still air in its cells and does considerably more for comfort than a single layer of fabric. In bathrooms and sculleries, powder-coated aluminium venetian slats handle the moisture that would spoil timber.

What the free measure decides

Reveal depth and the fixing substrate, which vary house by house. The true exposure of each opening, which sets the wind rating outdoors. The hardware grade, which depends on how much salt-laden air that particular wall takes. Power routing or a charging position for anything motorised. And how a fabric reads in this bright valley light, which is a decision best made in the room itself.
